Clos Rougeard is one of the most iconic and revered wine estates in France, located in the Loire Valley, specifically in the Saumur-Champigny appellation. Founded in the 17th century, the domaine built its legendary reputation under the stewardship of the Foucault family, particularly brothers Charly and Nady Foucault, who managed the estate for decades. Today, the estate is owned by Martin Bouygues, but its commitment to excellence and tradition remains unchanged. Clos Rougeard is celebrated for its small production, meticulous vineyard management, and devotion to biodynamic and organic farming practices long before they became widespread. Its vineyards, planted with Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Chenin Blanc, are situated on limestone-rich soils that lend elegance, complexity, and aging potential to the wines. The estate's flagship wines, including Le Bourg and Les Poyeux, are considered benchmarks for Cabernet Franc, combining power, finesse, and incredible depth.
The wines of Clos Rougeard are crafted with a focus on tradition, using natural fermentation, minimal intervention, and long aging in carefully selected oak barrels. These practices result in wines of remarkable purity, balance, and longevity.
